By July 2017-the last time they were restocked-they were sold out within a few hours. The shoe was initially released in 2012, but according to J.Crew, the need to restock the kicks every few months only cropped up in 2016. These posts garner overwhelmingly positive comments, ranging from "dope" and "fire" to "Awesome! They are sold out right?!" The J.Crew x Nike Killshot 2s are one of the few things that everybody in and around the sneaker world-arguably the most opinionated and critical group of people in menswear-seems to agree are simply good.īut the Killshots weren’t always such an outsize success. On Instagram, an account named posted the kicks with the caption "Actually got a pair." The user posted a picture in his new Killshots with a lengthy caption explaining how he lucked out at his local J.Crew store in Massachusetts. To a certain style-minded (but not style-obsessed) guy, the J.Crew Killshot is a grail-level sneaker. By mining Nike's archives, J.Crew stumbled-seemingly unintentionally-upon what has become one of the brand's most prominent success stories. Rather than manufacture its own kicks, J.Crew has relied on stocking selected offerings from third-party brands like Asics, Adidas, and Tretorn and releasing collaborations with New Balance, Vans, and of course Nike. But as menswear grew increasingly sporty and casual, J.Crew was forced to pivot to meet the demands of customers (albeit at the pace you might expect a company that brings in close to $2.5 billion in revenue a year to), and began rapidly expanding its sneaker offerings sometime around 2012.

Where did the shoe come from? And why do guys-particularly the kind who couldn’t tell you the difference between Raf Simons and Gene Simmons-love it so much?įor roughly the first 30 years of its existence, J.Crew wasn't a sneaker store. Most of all, J.Crew needs the Killshot in 2017, a time when the company’s struggles are earning the bulk of its headlines. Guys buy them not to blend in, but to have something that’s slightly unique and that fashion-adjacent bros of a certain stripe will notice. The Killshot 2, meanwhile, is an actual hit. The last time a J.Crew product was this hot, it was a blue gingham shirt-but its fame was fueled more by a dig at the kind of mainstream, cookie-cutter bro who wore it. Still, the fact that a J.Crew sneaker is currently more present on the secondary market is noteworthy. Now, these aren't exorbitant prices on the aftermarket (the recent Nike x Tom Sachs Mars Yard Shoe 2.0 has an average price of $660). On eBay prices are more varied, ranging from $110 to $250.

On StockX, a site that compiles data on how much certain sneakers are currently fetching on the aftermarket, the J.Crew x Nike Killshot 2 currently has an average value of $112 to $158, far more than its $90 retail price. But the Killshot 2 is white-hot: Since early 2016, it’s sold out every time it’s hit, most recently in July 2017, and before that in March. At first glance, the shoe is nothing special-it looks like nothing so much as other vintage tennis styles from the 1970s, and its gum sole and suede mud guard suggest a resemblance to the Adidas Samba (a sneaker that costs $60 and is almost always available). These givers and receivers of male fashion advice were up in arms about the J.Crew x Nike Killshot 2, a J.Crew revamp of a vintage Nike tennis style. Nice job, /r/MFA." One user named "metcarfre" wrote, "WE DID IT!!!" Others referred to them as the "Memeshot 2s." One user stated that the J.Crew store he worked at sold out of the sneakers in four hours on the day of their release.
